Is a rare, benign condition characterized by the formation of fibrous nodules within the plantar fascia, the thick connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of Ledderhose Disease remains unknown. However, several factors are thought to contribute:
• Genetic predisposition: Family history of fibromatosis conditions may increase risk.
• Repetitive mechanical stress: Prolonged standing, walking, or microtrauma to the foot may trigger fibrous tissue changes.
• Associated systemic conditions: Links have been found with diabetes mellitus, liver disease, epilepsy, and alcohol use.
• Related connective tissue disorders: Individuals with Ledderhose Disease often present with Dupuytren’s contracture (palms of the hands) or Peyronie’s disease (penile fibromatosis), suggesting a shared pathological mechanism.
